India is a land of diversity, where each State has something special to offer to the modern tourist. Life is too hectic these days. The cities demand a life in a fast lane. Everyone is too caught up in raising their standard of living that they dont have any time left to themselves. There is an immense sense of urgency , the traffic on the roads is just terrible, there is a lot of noise and pollution. On top of this, one is accustomed to fast food and junk food and develop poor eating habits. One has to take a break from all of this and the rural areas of India provide just the right kind of environment to refresh the mind, body and soul. The villages of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan like Jaisalmer, and the Desert Attractions Pushkar have become a hot spot destinations for tourists from all around the world. India's villages are filled with such scenic beauty which is out of this world. There is greenery everywhere and most of the land is covered with lush fields.

There are many tourist attractions here. One can take a ride through the field on a bullock cart. Discovering India has always been an enticing experience, but this experience will become a little challenging henceforth. Owing to the fact that tourism in India is growing on a very rapid pace spreading its influence over this exotic continent of sub-India. Hence taking a toll over the flora, fauna and cultural identity, heritage which has been widely observed by the authorities, and even the local populace is becoming aware of this and hence have started realizing the responsibility of sustainability of the destinations on the part of visiting tourists through this new facet of tourism world Responsible Tourism. Now the tourists have to be more vigilant while traveling a destination. This implies that the tourists will be rebuffed and will be obliged to pay penalty if they were found indulging into any kind of misuse of mishandling of a particular attraction like littering, wasting food or chasing any animal. The main aim of propagating responsible tourism is to ensure the longevity of the essence of any region.

This might not be a very new concept in India, as Matheran near Mumbai had enforced the act of banning entry to motor vehicle a decade ago. The initiative of responsible tourism has already been embarked in West Bengal, where tourists are asked to check on water usage. On the similar line villagers of North East and Himachal Pradesh have teamed up against poaching. The state governments have also envisaged becoming pro active towards responsible tourism. Kerala has taken a remarkable step towards this phenomenon by adopting the Kerala declaration that calls for action to all stakeholders in tourism. The government has recognized Kumarakam, Kovalam, Thekkady and Wayanad as the destinations for responsible tourism. The tourism government is conceptualising ways to make this initiative a success by sensitizing the villagers, panchayats, self help groups, traders, property holders and even tour operators. In Chandigarh as well, responsible tourism has been adopted as a policy.

Members of the tourism board are accepting the fact that if certain impositions are not made then the tourism industry of India will not survive for long.


Another concept is of help tourism that has shown significant response in West Bengal and North East. People too are welcoming it enthusiastically, and hence this concept has been pronounced to be giving a boost to tourism. In Manas Tiger park alone 1,000 volunteers have taken up the responsibility to check poaching and also act as tourist guide. This has also helped the locals understand the value of their culture and come out of isolation. The methodology that is in the pipeline plans to incorporate 'hand holding' wherein after every seven years, one generation pass this concept to the next.

Winter Dilemma!!!!

Everybody was so relieved till the end of December. The winters in Delhi this year has been absolutely pleasant and it seemed as if it will continue to be this way. Clear atmosphere with ample sunshine was the trend last month. Well, Decembers are supposed to be the chilliest month of the year in Delhi and it was a surprise how it turned out to be. It also was a month of traveling. A festival season with such magnificent weather are hard to come by and people were making most of it by planning excursions to nearby areas. Some to Rajasthan and some adventurous people to hill stations in Himachal and Uttaranchal.

But the shining atmosphere was short lived. As if to deliberately spoil the happy mood of people, nature decides to lower temperatures a little and make it a bit foggy. Two days before New Year, it was freezing cold with absolutely nil visibility during early mornings and nights. So much for all the excursions and family vacations. I was not ready to go to the nearby market, let alone hundreds of kilometers away.

Just after a week of harsh temperatures, things are getting back to normal. Though my plans to go for excursions were put on hold, I am again all set to step out. Better Late Than Never

and polite one could be. And with the stints I had with these people, I

It is hard to find a destination better than Delhi for shopping. There are as many famous markets here in Delhi as there are towns in any city. Even though I have been shopping for my clothes since childhood days, my shopping was limited to where my parents took me. In fact it was not before my college days that I choose where to shop from.

I must say, I have been an ardent shopper for the past few years, hopping from one market to another, searching for the specialty of that place. The emergence of mall culture has brought about a sea of shift in the shopping habits of ‘Dilli wallas’. People, who were regular to the charming Connaught place and Janpath shops, today are more comfortable in the mall opened just behind their homes. But still there are people who remain loyal to the old ways of shopping.

Connaught place is a perfect place to shop for readymade clothes. Shops like Jainsons and Greenways have been around for quite a time and offer trendy clothes at reasonable clothes. But overall, I found C P to be slightly overpriced. Probably it’s because you don’t find many street shops where you can bargain. Not too far is a market exactly opposite in nature. Janpath market offers most fashionable clothes at unbelievably low prices. No wonder you will find it overcrowded most of the times, especially just before the college session starts. Janpath is a virtual paradise for youngsters on a lookout for western clothing and accessories that will not punch holes in their pockets (or their parent’s). Do not forget to look for some fashionable foot wear here. Kolapuris anyone??? For me personally, Sarojini Nagar (S N) market is unmatched for family shopping. It was here my family and me came since early years. So I find shopping in Sarojini Nagar quite comfortable. More than money, you need time to get the best out of S N.

For people who are looking for items straight out of their origin place, then Dilli Hart is the place to be. Here you will find shops that sell handicraft items made by people from different states. Pashmina from Kashmir, Cotton Saris from West Bengal and Silk saris from Kancheepuram, are all available here. Then there are government emporiums in C.P that are good in this context. One of the most high profile market in Delhi is the M-block market in G-K I. It is most noted for the splendid jewelry shops. Though I have never entered them, I have heard that they offer jewelry and precious stones ranging from budget range to anything you can imagine.

No matter how developed the markets in New Delhi are, one just cannot ignore the markets in Old Delhi. Chandni chowk has few of the best shops for buying different types of spices. Nayi Sadak, a part of Chandni Chowk, is a heaven for students who can find all types of books, both new and used, here.
While doing all the shopping, don’t forget to serve your taste buds as well. Delhi is known for its fast foods and snacks like fruit chaats, golgappas and a lot more. And you don’t have to tread away from your shopping paradise as you will find the eating joints right next to these markets.
