Maruti Plans a 'Tata'

How ironic it is??

Tata Nano- IN
Maruti 800- OUT

Maruti has announced plans to phase out the people's car of India 'Maruti 800' starting next year.

The Euro-IV emission norms would be applied in 11 cities by 2015-16 and Maruti has decided not to upgrade their popular Maruti 800 car to meet these emission norms and instead go for a systematic phase out by the time these norms are enforced.

"Once Euro-IV emission norms are applied across the country, which is likely to happen around 2015-16, then M800 and Omni may not be a saleable product. We will have to eventually phase (them) out them" said R C Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki India.

The timing of this news couldn't have been more ironic than the present when the rival Tata Group has made a breakthrough entry into the small car segment with the introduction of the worlds cheapest car, Tata Nano. However, the Dream Team is sure that the iconic brand of Maruti will not surrender their market share so timidly to the Tata's and will gather around the drawing board to come out with a response to the Nano.

It is indeed sad to see the original people's car go and that it will no longer be made.

We end on that sad note.

Please keep your thoughts flowing.

I'll surely miss this little beauty. There is a certain Indian-ness to M-800 that when missing, will change the entire feel of Indian roads....

I just hope they come out with an idea to carry on with this car. As long as there is middle class in India, there will be buyers for M-800
