Munnar Wildlife

About Munnar:
Munnar is called the paradise of nature. It is the best known hill station of Kerala on the Western Ghats. Munnar was the most favourite hill station for British Government of South India. They used this beautiful place as their summer resort in the colonial times. Munnur is a tamil language word. In tamil language, munnu means 'three' and aar means 'river'.

It is located at the junction of three rivers – Muthirappuzh, Nallathanni and Kundala. It is one of the major centers of Kerala's tea production. There are many waterfalls, lakes, backwaters and streams among the slopes and valleys of lush green hills. Also there are a number of wildlife sanctuaries around Munnar, where you can enjoy an adventurous and mesmerizing trip.

Wildlife at Munnar:

Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary:
Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is set up to protect the extincted Nilgiri Tahr (mountain goat). The sanctuary is spread over 97 square kilometers of area, covering royal green carpets of grasslands. It is surrounded by the mountain Anamudi, which is the highest peak of south Himalayas. This is declared as a National Park in 1978. You can see many species of animals and birds here.


Animals: Nilgiri tahr, Nilgiri langur, lion tailed macaque, Asian elephant, Indian bison, tiger, leopard,wild dogs, mangoose, otter, large brown flying squirrel, mouse deer, sambar, barking deer etc.

Birds: More than 200 species of birds like eagle, crested serpant eagle, black baza, crested goshawk,spot-bellied eagle owl, alpine swift, Grey junglefowl, Nilgiri flycatcher, little spiderhunter etc.

Anamudi Shola National Park:

Anamudi Shola National Park is situated in Idukki, the biggest district of Kerala. It is declared as a protected area by the Government of Kerala on November 21, 2003. Recently the park is being administered under the Kerala Department of Forest & Wildlife, which is a division of Munnar Wildlife.

It is spread over 7.5 square kilometers of lush green forests. Thoovanan Waterfalls is one of magnetic sights of the park. Also you can explore the rarest types of plants and along with a large varieties of flora & fauna at Anamudi Shola National Park.

Chinar Wildlife Sanctuary:


Chinar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in Western Ghats, that covers an area of 90 square kilometers.It is located in ''rain shadow region'', as Chinar receives only 48 days rain during the months of October and November. In 1984 it was recognized as a Wildlife Sanctuary. You can see a number of species in this sanctuary as giant grizzled squirrel, tigers, bison, spotted deer, vipers, black eagles,cormorants, spectacled cobras, etc. Also it is an ideal place for boating and trekking as well.

Rajamala Wildlife Sanctuary:

Rajmala Wildlife Sanctuary is a part of Eravikulam National Park, situated 15 kilometers away from Munnar. It is located in the lap of Anamudi, the highest peak in South India. You can find here pretty peaceful surroundings with greenery scattered all around. World's half population of the rare Nilgiri Tahr is found in Rajmala. Other than Tahrs you can find here many other species like elephant, tiger,leopard, sambar, langur, Malbar civets, barking deer and pythons.
Kurinjimala

Kurinjimala Sanctuary:

Kurinjimala Sanctuary is situated in Idukki district in Munnar region. It was declared as a sanctuary on November 7, 2006. Neelakurinji is the name of a beautiful blue flower, which is heavily found here. That is why it is known as Kurinjimala, that means ''mountain of kurinji flower''. This sanctuary is the protected area of endangered species like tiger, Nilgiri tahr, grizzled giant squirrel, elephant,Nilgiri wood pigeon, bison, sambar, deer and neelakurinji.

Kamet and he got to this valley. He was so much fascinated with the beauty of this flowery place that he named it as 'Valley of Flowers'. He also wrote a book named Valley of Flowers that revealed the secrets of this splendid place and opened the door of this verdant destination to all the nature lovers.


Valley of Flowers Trekking:

It is about 17 km trek to the Valley of flowers and the nearest town from here is Joshimath in Garhwal region. Joshimath is well connected via road through Haridwar and Dehradun.



The main trek starts from Govindghat which is a small place nearby Joshimath at an hour distance. From Govindghat after covering a path of 14 km the trekkers reach to Ghangaria which is just 3 km from the valley. The magical valley starts at a gorge over the Pushpawati river. Apart from trekking mountaineering at Valley of Flowers is a must do activity.

Sariska National Park in Rajasthan
