Commonwealth Games 2010 - Top Indian Players

India is ready to host its first ever Commonwealth Games in Delhi. On the stroke of this historic moment, every Indian is wishing the country good luck to make this sports festival - a memorable extravaganza. Over 7000 athletes from 71 nations will compete in 17 sports for the hunt of medals at CWG 2010. Amongst this enriched class of sportsmen, Indian players are also giving their best shot to gold medal in various events. Many Indian players have excelled in their respective sports during recent past and they have already stated their gold quest as "Final Frontier".

Here is a list of top five Indian players participating in Commonwealth Games 2010.

Saina Nehwal

Sport : Badminton
Recent Achievement : First Indian Women to reach semi finals of All-England Super Series

Currently ranked as No. 3 in International Badminton Rankings, Saina Nehwal is the new badminton sensation from India. She has impressed the world with her exceptional badminton skills and winning many tournaments including World Junior Badminton Championship. .


Vijender Singh

Sport : Boxing
Recent Achievement : Gold at Commonwealth Boxing Championship 2010

The olympic bronze medalist Vijender has come a long way from his medal win at Beijing olympics. The dude from Haryana state has become the face of Indian boxing alongside his team mates Akhil Kumar and Suranjay Singh. India will settle nothing less than gold from this boxing duo.



Sushil Kumar

Sport : Wrestling
Recent Achievement : Gold at World Wrestling Championship

Tagged as world champion in World Wrestling Championship 2010, Sushil Kumar is the first Indian wrestler to win gold at Worlds. His historic bronze medal at Beijing Olympics makes India expect a gold from his Commonwealth Games 2010 schedule.


Rohan Bopanna

Sport : Tennis
Recent Achievement : Davis Cup against Brazil

Rohan has evolved as the second generation of tennis superstars in India. Keeping at par with masters like Leander Paes & Mahesh Bhupathi, Bopanna has brought India laurels on many occassions. His recent dream run at U.S open doubles is ensuring a medal addition to India's CWG 2010 medal tally.


Gagan Narang

Sport : Shooting
Recent Achievement : Bronze at ISSF World Shooting Championship

A front runner in India's shooting line up, Gagan Narang belongs to the class of elite sportsmen in India. He bagged 4 gold medals at 2006 Commonwealth Games and is expected to repeat history. Gagan is a world record holder in 10 metre air rifle (qualification & finals).

Commonwealth Games Venues - Delhi 2010


Delhi is all set to host its first ever Commonwealth Games from October 3, 2010 to October 14, 2010. From roads to buildings and other infrastructural facilities, the national capital has got a complete makeover making it ready for this sports extravaganza. 72 nations will compete in 17 different sports for supremacy in the world of commomwealth sports. Several new stadiums and training centers have been constructed and the old stadiums have been renovated in accordance to latest technology and standards. Apart from this, a world class games village has also been constructed n the banks of River Yamuna to accommodate around 8000 athletes from all over the world.

Here is a glimpe of some major competition venues for Commmonwealth Games 2010.

Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex

Delhi's epic stadium will be the epicente of Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010. The opening and closing ceremony of CWG 2010 will be held at this venue. A huge sum of Rs 500 crore has been spent on its renovation and makeover.



Indira Gandhi Sports Complex

This is another masterclass stadium of Delhi which has got a completely new look for Commonwealth games. The easiest way to reach here is by Delhi Metro as it is situated near Indraprastha metro station.

Thyagaraj Sports Complex

The Thyagaraj Sports Complex is situated near India's top hospital AIIMS. Recently opened link of Delhi metro (Central Sercretariat to Qutub Minar) has provided an excellent accessablity to this venue.

Dr. S.P. Mukherjee Swimming Stadium

For making Common Wealth Games 2010 a grand success, a world class swimming stadium has been constructed in Central Delhi. The stadium has one competition pool, one diving pool and one warm-up pool. An overall capacity of 5,178 makes it one of the best swimming stadiums in the world.

Talkatora Indoor Stadium

The Talkatora Indoor Stadium has been the favorite location for various international and national events since a long time. For CWG - Delhi 2010, the stadium has got a completely new look with one competition ring and four warm-up areas for boxing sports.

Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium

This world class sporting venue in Delhi has recently hosted the FIA Hockey World Cup (men) with great pride and honor. Likewise the stadium will be used for hockey events in 19th Commonwealth games in Delhi.

Siri Fort Sports Complex

This competition venue of Commonwealth Games 2010 is situated near the Asian games village in Siri Fort road. Boosting off newly laid world class courts for badminton and squash, the Siri Fort Sports complex is easily accessible through Delhi metro. The bnearest metro station is Moolchand and Green Park.Badminton

Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range

This world class shooting range has been constructed specially for Commonwealth Games 2010. It is situated on a comparatively outer edge of national capital in Badarpur Border area for one category and Kadarpur for second category. Situated around 21 kms away from games village, Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range doesn't have any metro train links.

R.K. Khanna Tennis Complex

For CWG 2010, an excusively new tennis complex has been constructed with facilities of international level. R.K. Khanna Tennis Complex, situated in Green Park area has got one centre court, six match courts and six warm-up courts.

Yamuna Sports Complex

The Yamuna Sports Complex has been constructed in east Delhi for two major events. Nearets metro train connectivity includes Karkardooma, Jhilmil and Anand Vihar metro station.

Delhi University

Delhi's young face Delhi University is also hosting an event during Commonwealth Games 2010.Popular by the name of Bermuda Princess 77 Grass, the DU stadium is situated near to Vishwavidyalya metro station.
